With over 5700 registrations from 27 states and 750 colleges this year, Ingenium is now a primary national forum for the engineering student fraternity to showcase their talent. The gala event held in Bangalore witnessed students from final year/pre-final year BE / B.Tech / dual degree across India, showcase some out-of-the-box projects.

Among the shortlisted 10 teams, SolarMobil from Manipal Institute of Technology was adjudged as the winning team for our beloved car SERVe ( Solar Electric Road Vehicle). Besides an enticing cash prize, the winning team are also sponsored by Airbus to fly to Europe on a facility tour of its Stade & Bremen facility in Germany.

Announcing the winners, Dr Ajay Prabhu, COO, QuEST Global commented, “India is a fast growing economy and the major reason for this growth is its young intellects. When we talk about Make in India, the real question is how to truly ”Create and Engineer in India”.

The team was represented by a delegation of Arvind Nayak, Amol Grover and Darshan Mehta led by faculty advisor Mr. Umananda K.V. Speaking on the team’s victory, Arvind Nayak said ”This is overwhelming for our team. Hard work has led to all this. The recognition that we have been awarded will bring us a step closer to living our dreams. We want to thank QuEST Global for the positive influence that they have had in our lives as well for the big opportunities they have brought our way”.

Mr Marcus Gehle, Head of Engineering for Wing Moveables & Plant Engineering Teams – Stade & Bremen of Airbus said, “We are delighted that we could provide the opportunity for these talented students in association with QuEST Ingenium to sponsor their trip to our facility based in Germany. Nurturing talent is an important aspect of our globalization strategy and we are glad that we are extending our hands to such students to come forward and be a part of this big industry”.

Greetings from Team SolarMobil!

Team SolarMobil would like to thank all its followers, mentors, sponsors and benefactors on the successful launch of our beloved car – SERVe (Solar Electric Road Vehicle). The team is grateful to Manipal University and Manipal Institute of Technology for nurturing the talents that constitute the backbone of the team. The institution(s) have been our primary benefactors since our inception in 2011.

SERVe was launched this April in Bangalore and unveiled at both Tata Power Solar and the FKCII Green Summit, 2015. As is evident from the extensive coverage we received from acclaimed news dailies and online publications such as Times of India, NDTV Auto, BBC Auto, and ScoopWhoop to name a few, SERVe has been able to capture the country’s imagination right from the onset. SERVe features aerodynamic curved design and runs on solar energy from its curved solar panels. The team received constructive criticism and was lauded by industry experts for its efforts.

SERVe- Solar Electric Road Vehicle

SERVe is India’s first passenger solar electric vehicle which uses clean and free fuel with zero emissions and zero noise pollution. It has a high strength chassis and is lightweight. SERVe has an aerodynamic and aesthetic design obtained from the cut section of a tear drop. Custom made curved solar panels are used with energy generation at 17% efficiency. Further SERVe is energy positive, which basically means the car can not only generate enough energy for its own use but also supply power to an external grid.

SERVe has been able to showcase that passenger solar cars are not only a possibility but a necessity of the not so distant future. Imagine a world without all the depleting fuel we feel entitled to and replace it with cars that run on an energy source that is infinitely abundant! SERVe is one such step in that direction.

Looking Ahead

The team seeks to improve on its work every year and thus has begun working on its third car. Buoyed by SERVe’s success and using it as reference, we at SolarMobil aim to build a new prototype and reach the American Solar Challenge, 2016. The competition is a 2000 km endurance race and is a melting pot of budding engineers and industry stalwarts who are vying for a cleaner and greener tomorrow. The challenge is backed by the Innovators Education Foundation (IEF) & the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

With the next car we aim to achieve greater speed and more power while focusing on driver ergonomics.

For more updates on the next car, catch us on our blog.

Progress Status: SERVe

SolarMobil Manipal regrets to inform its followers, sponsors and benefactors that the team will not be able to participate in Sasol South Africa Challenge 2014. We were unable to finish the body work of the car on time for the event as it was outsourced from a third party. With no time left for exhaustive testing and endurance runs, it would not have been possible for us to give our best performance in South Africa.  SolarMobil Manipal team is disappointed to be missing out on such an exciting challenge.

However, despite this setback, the team is working fervently to complete the manufacturing of SERVe and she will be displayed during Manipal Institute of Technology’s Technical Festival – TechTatva ’14 which will be followed by a national level launch later.

Currently, the status of SERVe is as follows –

1. The new solar panels from TATA Power Solar have been tested & mounted onto the vehicle.

2.The bodywork manufacturing is complete & is being mounted phase by phase onto the vehicle

3.The vehicle has been tested to run solely on solar power without battery power supply. The video of which can be found on our YouTube Channel.

The team is assessing the right opportunities to showcase its latest car on a global platform, including various international solar challenges.
